'Gerald McBoing Boing'

Friday July 1, 2005
THE FUNNY SITE OF THE DAY -- "This is the story of Gerald McCloy, and the strange thing that happened to that little boy," begins the classic cartoon's narration. Gerald cannot talk, but, oh, the sounds he does make!

One of the truly remarkable theatrical cartoons of the golden age, winner of an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Subject (1950), is a collaboration between innovative United Productions of America (UPA) and writer Dr. Seuss, who would later turn his film idea into a popular children's book.

Seeing the cartoon in a movie theatre in the mid-1950s is one of my earliest memories. The images have stayed with me all of this time, so I am delighted to report my recent viewing rekindled the happiness I experenced decades ago.

Enjoy "Gerald McBoing Boing" online at Toon Tracker, as part of a larger tribute to 'the noise-making boy" and his subsequent appearances.

I’m not aware of any 1999 McBoing Boings, but there were some made in 2005. I found some of them on DVD by running a search on Amazon.com.
