Born 1896: William A. Wellman, film director, "Nothing Sacred" (1937), "Roxie Hart" (1942), "Lady of Burlesque" (1943), "Magic Town" (1947), "The Happy Years" (1950). Died 1975.

1916: Dinah Shore, singer, actress, "Up in Arms" (1944), "Aaron Slick From Punkin Crick" (1952), "The Dinah Shore Chevy Show" (1956-63). Died 1994.

1928: Beth Brown was hired as a gagwriter on the film "Tenth Avenue," making her the first female comedy writer in Hollywood.

1936: Fanny Brice introduced her popular Baby Snooks character to radio audiences on "The Ziegfield Follies of the Air."

Born 1936: Alex Rocco, actor, "The Famous Teddy Z" (1989-90), "The George Carlin Show" (1994).

1940: Bob Hope hosted his first Academy Awards ceremony, a role he would perform more than 20 times.

Born 1944: Dennis Farina, actor, "Midnight Run" (1988), "Get Shorty" (1995), "That Old Feeling" (1997).
