In the 1946 Academy Award winner for Best Animated Short Subject, concert pianist Tom Cat performs his stirring rendition of a Franz Liszt favorite, only to be sabotaged by pesky Jerry Mouse.

Online at YouTube, the musical pantomime is atypical of the Tom & Jerry cartoon series and reminiscent of several prominent Warner Bros. shorts to come, including Bugs Bunny's "Rhapsody Rabbit," produced the same year. Subsequently, there were angry charges of plagiarism between the studios.

Review:

It's striking to observe the full, fluid animation style practiced at MGM by directors William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, known largely today for their limited animation (meaning "cost-cutting") approach on TV ("The Flintstones," "The Jetsons," "Scooby-Doo," et al.)

Here is one of the truly great cartoons of all time, inventive and funny, stretching outside the envelope -- a genuine classical classic.
